Billed as best practice in capital adequacy, Basel standards on banking have long been the global star in the realm of prudential rulemaking.

The latest version — Basel Endgame, as it has come to be known — was supposedly a done deal, with banks set to fork out more capital from 2025. But now regulators are having second thoughts.
