Standard Chartered fully deserves an award for achieving what must be the most outstanding efficiency level of any African bank. Its RoE soared to 147.9% last year, with a remarkably low 38.3% cost-income ratio, down from 40.6% previously. To improve its customer reach, the group brought in a direct sales mobile staff to compliment the existing direct sales representatives. The group has also made instant account opening available. Standard Chartered launched Botswana’s first chip based credit card last year and it is in the process of rolling out the country’s first women’s account. It is also introducing SME unsecured or partially secured instalments loans.

“On behalf of all Standard Chartered staff in Botswana, and our valued customers and stakeholders, it gives me great pleasure to receive the Bank of the Year Award for Botswana,” says chief executive David Cutting. “It is the fourth time in five years that we have won this prestigious award. The bank takes this recognition very seriously. We aim to continue to deliver outstanding financial results; to continue to be the right partner, leading by example, for our stakeholders, to out-serve and out-sell the competition; and to build on our significant reputation in the country.”
