Non-performing loans in emerging Europe rose in 2023 after a three-year decline

New study highlights refinancing risks for commercial real estate and SME lending in parts of Europe

Non-performing loan volumes in central, eastern and south-eastern Europe increased marginally in the 12 months to December 2023, reversing a three-year decline observed since 2020, according to the latest NPL Monitor report published by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. 

Non-performing loan volumes across CESEE rose on average by 0.9 per cent to €27.5bn between December 2022 and December 2023, with most countries maintaining a “steady NPL ratio”, with the exception of a few outliers.
