Nuevo Banco Comercial (NBC) was created after the deep crisis that affected the Uruguayan financial system in 2002. The group emerged as Uruguay’s largest bank committed to, and playing a fundamental role in, the nation turnaround process. In line with this commitment, the bank made a successful effort to convince Uruguayans that the financial system was reliable.

Today, managing more than $1bn in assets, NBC’s services cover the whole economic life-time of its customers and fulfil SME and corporate financial needs. “Our most important goal is to create value for our clients, and the society as a whole,” says general manager José Fuentes. “We have a driving ambition to be ranked first by both people and companies. We continue working as a universal bank, offering a whole range of financial services. We are currently immersed in an ambitious technology project to provide clients with the ultimate tools and to assure sound management of information and thus better decisions.

“We are also working to consolidate our leadership in the SME and corporate markets, expanding our customer base and product range in the retail sector, broadening our leading position in credit cards and growing the business in our subsidiary in Brazil.

“This year’s transfer of ownership from the state to the private sector entailed a significant number of initiatives to improve the bank’s competitive position. This was supported by an extensive institutional advertising campaign, investment in new technology and greater efficiency in the credit card business. NBC is now Uruguay’s market leader in credit cards.”
